Carl Byington is an entrepreneur and engineer with his own private consulting business called PHM Design. Carl previously worked with the Lockheed Martin company Sikorsky Aircraft, where he served as the United States Air Force (USAF) CBM+ Chief Engineer. While in the role with Sikorsky, he was responsible for a variety of tasks, including performing business development and strategic leadership activities. He was fortunate to be an owner and have a successful acquisition of Impact Technologies by Sikorsky relatively early in his career.

Educational Background

Carl Byington pursued some Ph.D. coursework at the Pennsylvania State University while working at the Applied Research Laboratory in State College PA. He completed his Master of Science degree at The George Washington University in Aeronautical Engineering and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1990. He specialized in hypersonic propulsion and received an AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics) Outstanding Graduate Student Achievement Award. Carl received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Pennsylvania, studying Mechanical Engineering, and graduated Cum Laude in 1988. Carl concentrated in Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, and Mathematics. He was awarded the Francis G. Tatnall Prize for the Most Outstanding Senior Design Project.

Hobbies and Interests

Outside of work, Mr. Byington enjoys a variety of outdoor pursuits, such as SCUBA diving, backpacking, marathon running, and mountain climbing. Carl Byington is also a Red Cross volunteer and multi-year blood donor with over 5 gallons donated. He also helped build a home with Tri-County Habitat for Humanity, and has been an Conference Chairman for multiple Technical Conferences. Please feel free to connect on LinkedIn.

Carl Byington was reviewed by the Today Show and other news media for his rock climbing injury and marathon recovery story. He and his best friend Nick Lagen went on to run marathons on all seven continents including Antarctica. They have started a new blog page for stories from those marathons.
